With the GirlCode hackathon, taking place virtually from 20 to 22 November, we are championing female entrepreneurship, supporting innovative ideas and driving gender diversity in the start-up and technology industry. A total of 100 female talents have the chance to participate in this year’s event. The event will be held in English.

We cannot change the world in one fell swoop, but we can and must start. For example, in actively supporting and promoting (potential) female founders through formats like the hackathon. Are there no role models? Let’s create some! Lacking confidence? Let’s share our knowledge! The framework conditions are not right? Let’s change them! Why women are so sought after in technology right now?

More women in leadership positions lead to higher revenues. In a survey of 22,000 tech companies worldwide, researchers at the Peterson Institute for International Economics found that gender diversity is indeed profitable for companies. The survey shows that moving from an all-male leadership to at least 30% women led to a 15% increase in profitability.

Femtech is the growth market of the future. This sector includes fertility solutions, period tracking apps, pregnancy and health care, women’s sexual wellbeing and reproductive system healthcare. Do we really want to leave these areas to men?

Women are also the most profitable target group for tech companies. In multi-person households, it is women who currently make 80% of purchasing decisions. Accordingly, all technical products and processes should be checked for their attractiveness to female users. Even better if they were developed by women.

As a result of these developments, “The state of the Worldwide Tech” shows that 89% of all decision-makers in the tech industry are convinced that more gender diversity increases business performance.

This trend is especially true for female developers, as only in a study on the popular software hosting platform Github showed that women have better programming skills. For example, 25% of female programmers adopted 100% of the proposed solutions to a posed problem, while this rate was only 13% for men. But when we talk about skills in this context, what do we mean?

The most important programming skills

Being a female developer means knowing at least one programming language. There is no way around that.   • Logical thinking: Finding out which error or which faulty line of code has led to a problem in a project is partly intuitive, but often a question of logic. If you don’t see your strengths here – no problem, because logical thinking can be trained.
  • Eye for detail: Understanding inter-connectivity of commands, general awareness and linguistic precision are extremely important parts of a coder’s toolkit. One way to stay on top of this is to be tightly organised. Always create a project plan against which you can assess, review and improve your work, and most importantly, don’t be too hard on yourself when you make mistakes.
  • Abstract imagination: Since the code you write and what it produces can never be physically observed and measured, successful coders must have a strong abstract imagination. This includes the ability to think about a topic, object or project on multiple levels simultaneously. The ability to match different symbols, commands and processes that are executed automatically with those you add manually. All of this is an important, often overlooked part of coding.
  • Interdisciplinary understanding: It’s great to know a technology intimately, but real-world problems can never be solved with a single technology. Even if you’re hired as a specialist, you need to know how your lines of code interact with the other software, hardware and network that make up the application’s ecosystem.
  • Patience: You write a code, you are full of confidence, you double and triple check everything and still it doesn’t work. This is what happens in the programming world all the time, and in the midst of all the frustration, never forget that with every problem you solve, you become a better developer.
